Security Problems & Modern Challenges of the Georgian National Currency

29 June, 2015
The Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) hosted a presentation of the book “Security Problems & Modern Challenges of the Georgian National Currency” on June 29. TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava, MP Tamaz Mechiauri, who chairs the parliamentary committee for budget and finances, representatives of the Ministries of Finance and Economy, International Monetary Fund, National Bank of Georgia, Tbilisi Mayor’s Office, foreign diplomats, experts, professors and students attended the event. The book is written by the founders of the Center for Analysis and Forecast at TSU, Otar Anguridze, Irakli Dogonadze and Vakhtang Charaia.

TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava said: “It is over half a year already that the issue related to the government and the National Bank is being discussed in Georgia. A very interesting material was prepared at the university on this issue. The only objective of our young PhD students, professionals was to find out what happened on Georgia’s currency market and how similar problems can be avoided in the future. I hope that this publication will be absolutely acceptable for the political elite, because the presented document is apolitical by nature.”

“The issue of security of the national currency has become very topical during the past six months. Our publication is about this issue and therefore it is important. The publication has scientific grounds; it contains recommendations to the National Bank of Georgia. We think that the publication will be interesting for experts and other persons interested in the issue,” Vakhtang Charaia, a co-author of the book, said.

“Similar publications are very important under current conditions. I am closely watching over the activities of these young people, their positions, which are sound and adequate to the situation. This publication is very important in terms of solution of persisting problems,” MP Tamaz Mechiauri said.

IMF resident representative to Georgia, Azim Sadikov, said that similar discussions were important for economic analysis and establishment of opinion.  Rector of TSU, Academician Vladimer Papava is the editor of the publication and the author of its preamble.

The book is dedicated to the issues of security of the Georgian national currency; it discusses internal (actions by the Georgian government, national and commercial banks) and external (remittances, Russian-Ukrainian crisis, oil prices, role of international organizations, etc.) factors affecting the Georgian currency exchange rate. The publication also offers short-term and long-term solutions to the National Bank of Georgia and government agencies.

The book is issued in Georgian and English languages.
