Public Lecture by Hans Timmer “Trade in Transition in Europe and Central Asia”

On May 11, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) hosted a public lecture “Trade in Transition in Europe and Central Asia” by Hans Timmer, the Chief Economist for the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region of the World Bank.
Deputy Rector of TSU, Mikheil Chkhenkeli, professors, students and other interested persons attended the event.
Hans Timmer hailed the meetings held at TSU, especially with students, as “very interesting.”
TSU student Nino Lobzhanidze said that Hans Timmer focused on a number of issues, among them Georgia’s role on the market of new technologies, whether Georgia can gain a comparative advantage and whether it can become a supplier of this service to the world market. “Hans Timmer said that Georgia has advanced in many directions and the world rankings serve to confirm it. His presentation was very interesting and I think that his views should be taken into account,” she said.
Hans Timmer became the Chief Economist for the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region of the World Bank on September 1, 2013. Prior to this, Mr. Timmer was the Director of the World Bank's Development Prospects Group. Under his management, the Group produced the World Bank’s annual flagship reports, Global Economic Prospects and Global Monitoring Report, in addition to a wide range of monitoring and forecasting publications, including Global Development Finance. Mr. Timmer has vast experience working with the European Commission, IPCC and the OECD, as well as with the Indian Planning Commission and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He holds a Master’s degree in econometrics from Erasmus University in Rotterdam, and was a researcher at the University of Lodz in Poland and at the Netherlands Economic Institute.
