First International PhD Program in Digital Humanities

24 February, 2017
The first selection round of the Volkswagen Stiftung-funded project International PhD Program in Digital Humanities was opened at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University on February 24. Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze, representatives of Georgian and German universities, students attended the event.

Rector Giorgi Sharvashidze said: “It is the first case, when a structured PhD program is being created in the entire higher education space of Georgia. Over 60 applicants will be participating this year. It is really an important direction, which, regretfully, is not developed. We hope that 25 finalists will leave for Germany, where they will be able to get a good doctoral education. Besides the number of participants, the composition is also interesting: there are eight foreign PhD candidates; it means that it is an international level PhD program. Three PhD programs are being prepared in partnership with the Volkswagen Foundation – Digital Humanities, one mixed PhD program in the direction of mathematics and PhD program in the direction of educational management.”

“Implementation of an international PhD program is very important for Georgian universities, as it enables to implement doctoral schools of European standard in Georgia. It is a kind of experience not only for the students, who will get involved in this PhD program, but also for the academic staff, because they will become one of the very important parts of this international school,” Prof. Manana Tandashvili of Goethe University Frankfurt noted.

An international scientific project Cross-National Doctoral School is being implemented by Goethe University Frankfurt (Germany), Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) and Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University (BSU). The project funded by the German Volkswagen Foundation (Volkswagen Stiftung) aims at organizing selection rounds for the International PhD Program in Digital Humanities. The first selection round will be held at the Tbilisi State University (24-27.02.2017) and Batumi State University (1-3.03.2017). Out of 61 registered candidates, eight are foreign nationals. 25 candidates will be selected, who will participate in the second selection round planned at Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany on March 23-29. Special competition commission will name the winners of the first round on March 5.
