Presentation of Ivane Javakhishvili Album

Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) hosted a presentation of the Ivane Javakhishvili Album on January 10. 

The album includes Ivane Javakhishvili’s personal archival materials kept at Korneli Kekelidze National Center of Manuscripts, which involve legal and economic terms. The terms have been composed by Ivane Javakhishvili on the basis of historical documents, sources and manuscripts. The publication was dedicated to Ivane Javakhishvili’s 140th birth anniversary. The project has been implemented by Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and Korneli Kekelidze National Center of Manuscripts. 

Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze said that the album includes over 1800 economic and legal terms and definitions. “Unique materials have been published. I want to thank everyone, who participated in the project, especially Korneli Kekelidze National Center of Manuscripts, as well as our scientists for the work performed by them in publishing this album,” Giorgi Shervashidze said. 

Doctor of Science of Law, Prof. Malkhaz Badzagua is the initiator and manager of the project. Director of Korneli Kekelidze National Center of Manuscripts, Dr. Prof. Zaza Abashidze is the editor of the album. “An idea emerged to publish the cards kept in Ivane Javakhishvili’s archives and involving legal and economic terms as a phototype edition, thus enabling young people, students and scientists to familiarize themselves with Ivane Javakhishvili’s heritage not only in a printed form, but also through a phototype edition in order to see how the great scientist was working on these terms, what particular corrections he was making,” Zaza Abashidze said. 

The album includes up to 1845 terms listed in alphabetic order and bearing archival reference numbers. Each term is written on a separate card, along with referring to a source. Manuchar Guntsadze of the National Center of Manuscripts said that the total number of similar terms in Ivane Javakhishvili’s personal archives is much higher, but the album includes only those cards, which were handwritten by Ivane Javakhishvili. “It helped protect this material, on the one hand, and simultaneously, it provided simplified access to the materials for the persons studying Ivane Javakhishvili’s biography, since a great part of these materials has never been published before,” Manuchar Guntsadze said. 

The album will help researchers and persons interested in Ivane Javakhishvili’s activities gain easier access to the latter’s personal archival materials; moreover, it will promote the work on legal and economic terms.
