Project “Let’s Learn Georgian” Continued

A ceremony of awarding certificates to successful listeners and lecturers of Let’s Learn Georgian program of accelerative integrated method of teaching the official language and constitutional principles was held at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on December 17.  A film about the project as well as photo and video materials featuring the process of learning were shown at the event.  
Project Coordinator, TSU Professor Ekaterine Kobakhidze summarized the program’s one-year activities. She said that the program Let’s Learn Georgian covered all the three regions with ethnic minority population (Kvemo Kartli, Kakheti and Samtskhe-Javakheti). As of 2016, the project has over 5000 listeners and lessons are held in about 73 villages.
Head of Administration of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Nunu Ovsyannikova; Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Nana Gaprindashvili; Head of the Georgian President’s Administration, Giorgi Abashishvili; President’s Adviser for Ethnic Minority Issues, Sopio Shamadini; State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality, Ketevan Tsikhelashvili, professors, lecturers, invited guests and program listeners attended the event.    
Head of the Georgian President’s Administration, Giorgi Abashishvili said that the project is being successfully implemented for already two years and this year constitutional principles were added to teaching the official language. “Since the President of Georgia announced the next year as the Year of Education, we will continue supporting this project to help more non-Georgian citizens of our country get education in the Georgian language,” Abashishvili said.
State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality, Ketevan Tsikhelashvili said that “for any civilized state, knowledge of the official language is a precondition for getting involved in all the spheres of life in the country; just this is the goal of this project.”
One of the listeners from the Gardabani district, Aigiyun Mamedova spoke about the project’s importance and necessity. She said: “I am a pharmacist and knowledge of Georgian was essential for my activities. The project “Let’s Learn Georgian” helped me achieve this goal. I am very satisfied with the results. I wish that similar programs continue in future to help more ethnically non-Georgian people learn Georgian.”
Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University started to implement a pilot project “Let’s Learn Georgian” funded by the President’s reserve fund in 2015. The project envisages accelerative methods of teaching Georgian in the regions densely populated with ethnic minorities; it enables all interested persons to learn the official language. The project was implemented in three regions (Kvemo Kartli, Kakheti, Samtskhe-Javakheti), nine municipalities (Marneuli, Gardabani, Bolnisi, Dmanisi, Tetritskaro, Akhalkalaki, Akhaltsikhe, Sagarejo and Lagodekhi), 73 villages with over 5000 listeners. A special textbook was developed for the program (by TSU Associate Professor Kakha Gabunia); the courses in the regions were led by professors and lecturers from TSU.
