Vardzia Hosts 8th International Archaeological Conference Dedicated to Pitt Rivers

The 8th International Archaeological Conference was opened in Vardzia Historical-Architectural Museum-Reserve on May 21 with the participation of scientists and students from Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, as well as the Universities of Oxford, Warsaw, Sheffield, Innsbruck, Edinburgh, Bologna, Jena, Pennsylvania, Lodz and Torun. Over the next few days, the archaeologists from the world leading universities will discuss unique discoveries of Grakliani, Urartu, Jerusalem, Petra, etc.
“This is the eighth time already that Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University holds a conference to assess international individual research with the participation of the representatives from the best universities of the United States and Europe. This conference has quite a different goal, as Georgian students and future archaeologists have an opportunity to submit the results of their individual research for discussion at an international level,” Prof. Vakhtang Licheli, head of the Institute of Archaeology, said.
The working session is led by Michael Vickers, Professor Emeritus of Archaeology at the University of Oxford. He said that “this is a high standard conference. The purpose of the conference is to enable Georgian prospective students to familiarize themselves with the opinions of other archaeologists and to submit their research papers to foreign counterparts.”
The 8th International Conference of Student Archaeologists was dedicated to the memory of famous English archaeologist, Pitt Rivers, who pioneered the use of stratigraphic methods in archaeology. Certificates of participation will be awarded to the students by the end of the conference, which will last till May 24.
