Acting Rector of TSU Visits Student Dormitory in Bagebi

Acting Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU), Darejan Tvaltvadze visited the student dormitory in Bagebi to become familiar with the existing situation. The Acting Rector met with TSU students and staff members living in the dormitory.
Darejan Tvaltvadze said that there is an extremely grave situation in the dormitory. Carrying out repair works is hampered by the fact that the dormitory buildings are not owned by TSU; they belong to the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development. “However, some works have already been conducted and are still underway. A tender has been announced to create a laundry room, which will serve the students living in these buildings. Water pipes and sewerage system will be replaced. Students do not have proper living conditions. A lot of money is needed to carry out repair works. We asked the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development to hand these buildings over to the university; a relevant letter has been sent to the Ministry of Education and Science to finance rehabilitation of our dormitories from the infrastructure development project. We hope that they will deal with the problems facing the university, our students with understanding,” Darejan Tvaltvadze said.
“I have lived in the dormitory for three years and the problem of sewerage and water supply system has been persisting for years. Water is leaking everywhere from the ceiling. It is very unhygienic and it may create certain problems in future. Anyway, it is quite possible to live here, especially if we take into account the fee which we pay – only GEL 30 per month,” Mariam Rosebishvili, student from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, said.
The dormitory for TSU students and staff members was built in Bagebi in 1975. All the five buildings of the dormitory were owned by the Ministry of Economy and TSU had the right to use them. In 2009 the Ministry of Economy allocated two 14-storey buildings and later in 2011 one 4-storey building for IDPs. Since then, TSU uses only two 4-storey buildings. Presently, 279 students and 53 staff members with low incomes live in about 190 rooms of the both buildings.
