TSU Elects Acting Rector

20 April, 2016
Polls opened at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) at 10am on April 20 to elect Acting Rector of the university. 16 individuals and 4 non-governmental organizations are involved in election observation. Secretary of the Election Commission, Demetre Egnatishvili said that “the polling station was opened in time. Voter turnout was high in the first half of the day. Voting will be completed at 6pm and we will announce the results of voting at 9pm.”

Four candidates are running in the elections: Tsira Baramidze (TSU Professor); Levan Gordeziani (TSU Professor); Darejan Tvaltvadze (TSU Professor, Deputy Rector) and Giorgi Andriadze (Doctor of Theology, Supervisory Board Chairman of the St. Andrew the First-Called Georgian University of Patriarchate of Georgia).

TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava has already cast his vote. “Today is an important day for the university. The University is electing Acting Rector through a unique procedure. Nothing similar has ever happened in the history of the university. There is huge interest. Most important is to end voting in a calm atmosphere and to count votes objectively that will enable the university to continue its activity in a usual mode under the guidance of the Acting Rector,” Papava said.

Tamaz Kaladze from Ilia Vekua Institute of Applied Mathematics at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University held a protest rally at TSU Building I. He said that his right to vote in the elections was restricted by the Law on Higher Education. The Law Department of TSU explained that an Acting Rector is elected by the election board consisting of all persons holding academic or scientific positions at TSU with a PhD or corresponding scientific degrees. According to the law, a person holding a scientific position at an independent scientific research unit is a member of the scientific staff.

The voting is underway in the conference hall foyer at TSU Building I.
