NATO and EU Auditorium Opened at TSU

The NATO and EU Auditorium was opened at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on April 5. The auditorium will offer students information booklets and literature about the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Union. Deputy Rector of TSU, Professor Ioseb Salukvadze, students from TSU and other higher educational institutions, representatives of the Information Centre on NATO and EU attended the opening ceremony.

On the sideline of the event, Philip Seib, Professor of Journalism and Public Diplomacy and Professor of International Relations at the University of Southern California delivered a public lecture on a topic “Modern Media Outlets, Media as a Component of Soft Power.”   

Professor Philip Seib said after the lecture that students asked him important questions about global issues, such as terrorism and fight against it. He also noted that he spends a lot of time with American students and whenever he travels, he tries to meet with students from the host countries. He also said that he is very glad to attend the Tbilisi conference to discuss extremely interesting issues about public diplomacy.

Professor Seib’s research interests include the effects of news coverage on foreign policy, particularly conflict and terrorism issues.

Acting Director of the Information Centre on NATO and EU, Tamar Medulashvili said that “Georgia will be hosting the NATO Week from April 4 to April 19 and the today’s event is just being held in frames of the NATO Week. We have opened an information corner at TSU dedicated to NATO and EU. We also have relevant literature designed for students. We opened the today’s event with the lecture by Professor Seib and I think that it was a very interesting and interactive meeting.”

“The U.S. public diplomacy is my research interest and therefore, it was very important for me to attend this meeting. I got an opportunity to get acquainted and ask questions to Philip Seib, one of the famous researchers of public diplomacy. I will definitely use this experience in my articles and Master’s thesis,” Mariam Khatiashvili, MA student in American Studies, said.
