Bust of Svimon Kldiashvili Unveiled at TSU

The bust of Svimon Kldiashvili, an architect, was unveiled in the courtyard of the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on June 3. TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava, academic staff, students and invited guests attended the event.

TSU Rector Vladimer Papava said: “TSU has a tradition to honor the university founders, creators of this building. Svimon Kldiashvili was an architect and builder of TSU Building I – the building, which is a symbol of our university and higher education in Georgia.”

“We mark the 150th birth anniversary of Svimon Kldiashvili. We have dedicated various events to this date. I am glad that the bust of Svimon Kldiashvili, architect of this building was unveiled in the courtyard of TSU. An exhibition will be held in September, where Svimon Kldiashvili’s projects and photos of his buildings will be exhibited,” Salome Chanturidze, member of the group of solemn events dedicated to Svimon Kldiashvili’s anniversary, TSU alumnus, Master of Arts, said.

By order of TSU Rector Vladimer Papava, 2015 was announced as the Year of Svimon Kldiashvili.

A number of events are scheduled throughout the year: a photo exhibition of Svimon Kldiashvili’s architectural works and preparation of a photo album; a scientific conference “Architecture of the 19th-20th Centuries and Modern Challenges”; a documentary about Svimon Kldiashvili’s life and activity.

Svimon Kldiashvili launched the construction of the main building of the Gymnasium for Nobility in 1900 and completed in 1906. The first-ever national university in the Caucasus was opened in 1918. In 1920 the entire building was handed over to the university.
