TSU Students at U.S. Universities

Three students of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University who are the winners of the competition announced by the U.S. Embassy to Georgia will leave for the United States next year and undergo studies at various U.S. universities during one semester.
The Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (also known as the Global UGRAD Program) is funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State; it is administered by World Learning in the United States and the U.S. Embassy to Tbilisi - in Georgia. The program provides one semester scholarships to outstanding undergraduate students from around the world for non-degree full-time study combined with community service, professional development, and cultural enrichment. The scholarship will cover international travel, accommodation, tuition fees, and in addition, a small monthly stipend.
Goga Katalandze is the second-year student, studying political science at the TSU Faculty of Social and Political Sciences.
“This is my first scholarship. I am very happy and simultaneously feel uneasy because I have never gone so far away from my home. Still, I think, it will be a huge experience for me. I will spend the spring semester in the city of Detroit in Michigan and then continue my studies (in political science) at Wayne State University. I will begin my studies on January 8 and end in May. I have already paid short-term educational visits to various European and post-Soviet countries. I plan to link my life with diplomatic activities in future, to study conflicts and make certain contribution to Georgia’s development. TSU helped me acquire huge experience. It helped me become a self-confident and brave student that eventually helped me overcome a lot of problems,” Goga Katalandze said.
Nino Kvirikashvili, the third-year student, who is studying international relations at the TSU Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, learnt about the competition from the U.S. Embassy’s Facebook page. She decided that participation in the competition would be the best opportunity to get qualitative education and experience and familiarize herself with American culture. Just therefore she decided to apply.
“I have never participated in exchange programs before; however, in summer 2017, I visited Moldova in frames of a short-term educational project. I am looking forward to the beginning of a new semester in the United States. Upon my return to Georgia, I will do my best to use the knowledge and experience gained in the United States in my native country. I plan to undergo my MA studies abroad. I am interested in diplomacy and want to work by profession,” Nino Kvirikashvili said.
“Naturally, the knowledge and experience gained at TSU helped me much in achieving this success. Relations with the lecturers from the Department of International Relations are very interesting and important for me. One of the major components of an application was a reference. Mr. Zurab Davitashvili and Ms. Sopia Petriashvili gave me references and I would like to thank them for it,” she added.
Natalia Chamiashvili is the fourth-year student, studying international relations at the TSU Faculty of Social and Political Sciences.
“I learnt about the competition from my friend and classmate, Tornike Abuladze, who won the same competition last year. Tornike’s example was a huge motivation for me. I won at my very first attempt, but I could not say that it was easy. I worked hard to get ready for each stage of the competition. Last year I obtained Erasmus+ scholarship and got an opportunity to receive European education. I returned from Germany two months ago, where I underwent studies at Viadrina European University. On January 19 I will leave for the United States. I will be focused on studying American history and culture. Due to the knowledge acquired at TSU, I successfully underwent MA courses in Germany. I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. Zurab Davitashvili and Ms. Sopia Petriashvili who recommended me three times for exchange programs and each time proved successful for me. I received stipends during each semester and I invested the entire funding in my education. I am eager to continue my MA studies abroad. However, it is not easy to obtain scholarship and I will have to work hard for it. I have launched a number of charity projects in frames of various international organizations and I want to implement them successfully in the near future,” Natalia Chamiashvili said.
